Sugar, nucleic acid, and protein are the three most important molecules in living organisms. Sugar can be converted into energy, amino acids, and genetic molecules including RNA and DNA, and is an important component of nerve cells.

Sugar plays a key role in Biology, and it also affects the transmission of information on the cell surface, and controls inflammation and immune responses. The complexity of sugar molecules is much higher than that of proteins, which leads to a very high threshold for the development of sugar biochemical science.

A report in Nature in July 2017, with sugar as the core research, reported that the century of developing new drugs employing Glycomics has come. Glycomics has been in the core of global new drug industry as glycans exist in majority of biological drugs or medications derived from nature.
